Black History Month Contest Winners

In honor of Black History Month, the City of Lynwood’s Recreation and Community Services Department, in partnership with the Citizens Council for Cultural Awareness, sponsored two contests open to Lynwood students. The winners were announced at last night’s City Council meeting. 

 

Elementary school students were eligible to enter the Black History Month Coloring Contest. 

 

Contest winner:  

Isabella Rodriguez, 6th grade, Wilson Elementary 

Isabella submitted a beautiful portrait of Sojourner Truth, an abolitionist and women’s rights activist. 

 

Middle and high school students were eligible to enter the Black History Month Essay Contest. They were asked to write an essay on the theme – Reflections on Black History Month: Inventions, Inventors or Innovators. 

 

Contest winner:  

Jessica Cortez, 12th grade, Lynwood High School 

Jessica wrote an essay on author Harriet Jacobs who wrote “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” published in 1861.
