Some very good people and organizations in Lynwood are in line to receive some long overdue recognition. Lynwood Mayor Oscar Flores has initiated The Mayor’s Community Recognition Award.

"There are many people and organizations in Lynwood that enrich the community through art, culture, volunteerism, and a host of other ways. This monthly award is in appreciation of their wonderful work and efforts that make our city better," said Mayor Flores.

Two organizations were recognized this week as co-winners of the award for February.

Bellas on Pointe (Youth Ballet program) – Now in their third year as a city program. Head Instructor Marisol Medina is a Lynwood native (LHS class of 2006) and teaches introductory ballet to local youth ages 3-15. Be on the lookout for announcement of their annual Spring recital taking place in May 2023.

Solid Stone Steppers (“Stepping” Dance program) – Instructor Lashonda Taylor started the group with just 4 kids and practiced informally outdoors at Burke-Ham Park. Ms. Taylor’s class is now a full-fledged Recreation Department program with an average of 20-kids per month enrolled. Ms. Taylor was looking for a way to give back to her community by providing positive activities to local kids. She teaches the art of “stepping” – energetic and elaborate synchronized group dance routines that are performed in competitions between fraternities and sororities called "step shows". Ms. Taylor purposely offers her class at accessible rates to youth ages 10-17.

We will be sharing news of future winners in the months to come!

Congratulations to the February winners.
