The Lynwood City Council commemorated Hispanic Heritage Month at last night’s City Council meeting by recognizing the Lynwood High School La Raza Club.

The proclamation was accepted by the La Raza Club students and Viviana Vargas, La Raza Club advisor. The student organization had a big part in the City of Lynwood’s Fiestas Patrias event that was held this past weekend.

“I want to commend you for immersing yourselves in the culture and learning and appreciating your roots, I think that’s super important to carry that on,” said Councilmember Oscar Flores during the presentation.

“To be recognized by the City Council means to have our name out there in the community,” said Alan Coca, co-president of the La Raza Club. “It’s so important because it recognizes all the Central American countries and these different ethnicities and nationalities, and to me, the City recognizing the nationalities and their existences are important. Lots of people tend to overlook them, that’s why we do the events, so people don’t forget their culture and the countries that they come from.”

Allison Bobadilla, co-president of the La Raza Club added, “This means a lot because it gives us an opportunity to express ourselves to celebrate our culture and our traditions, it gives us a vehicle to express our emotions and our feelings and appreciate the arts.”

“I was a former president of La Raza when I was a senior in high school,” said Lynwood Mayor Pro Tem José Luis Solache to the students during the City Council meeting. “If I can make it up here, so can you guys and beyond. So, whatever your dreams are and your goals, you can make it happen.”

Congratulations and thank you to the Lynwood High School La Raza Club!
